Why She Stopped Coming to Chapter

An elegant table set with white flowers, gold accents and candlelight

She has not resigned. She has not said a word against the chapter. She is simply not there any more.

Every alumnae chapter has a list of women like this, and most chapters read it as a commitment problem. It very rarely is.

What Actually Happened

Somewhere in the last few years, chapter went from being something she got to do to something she owed.

That shift is usually invisible and it usually happens the same way. She was capable, so she was given a role. She did it well, so she was given another. Eventually the meeting stopped being a place she went to be among her sisters and became one more place where people needed something from her.

And she is a woman in her forties or fifties who is already the one everybody needs something from. At home, at work, with her parents, with her children.

So the thing she dropped was the one where the consequences were softest. Not because she loved it least. Because it was the only one that would let her.

The Part that Matters

She is not gone. She is protecting something.

Women in this position almost always still feel the bond. Ask any of them about their line sisters and watch what happens to their face. The affection is entirely intact.

What is not intact is her capacity, and chapter as currently constructed is a withdrawal rather than a deposit.

That is a solvable problem, but not by guilt, and not by another attendance push. Those confirm exactly what she is already feeling.

What Brings her Back

Ask her a real question. Not “we miss you.” Try “what would have to be different for chapter to be worth the drive?” Then be quiet and let her answer honestly.

Make one gathering a year where nothing is asked of anybody. No committee sign up, no fundraising target, no roles. A room she can walk into and simply be a member of, which is the thing she originally joined for.

Separate membership from labour. A chapter where being present means being enlisted will always shrink to the women who can carry it. A chapter where a woman can attend without volunteering keeps everyone.

Speak to what she is actually carrying. The women in your chapter are high capacity, and high capacity women are usually the most depleted people in any room. Programme for that and you will fill it.

What a Session does for your Chapter

Amour Women™ speaks to sororities and alumnae chapters about the pattern underneath why capable women disappear, and gives every woman in the room language for what she has been carrying since long before she joined.

It is also the kind of programme that brings the missing names back, because women return for a room that finally names the thing.
